The codice fiscale is the first document anyone arriving in Italy needs: without it you can't open a bank account, sign a lease, or get a phone plan. It's free and issued on the spot. - Is the codice fiscale paid for?
- No. It's free, both the first issue and any replacement, and it's issued during the same visit. If anyone charges you to 'speed it up,' they're a middleman — the Agenzia delle Entrate's own service has no cost.
- Do I need to already be in Italy to get one?
- Not necessarily. Italian consulates abroad issue it too, and getting it before you travel saves time, since your bank and landlord will both ask for the code within your first few weeks.
- Why do they ask so much about how my name is spelled?
- Because the code is calculated from your first name, surname, date and place of birth. One wrong letter generates a code that doesn't match your other documents, and fixing it afterward is a separate process. Write your name out instead of spelling it aloud.
- Does a double-barrelled surname cause problems?
- It causes confusion, not real problems. The Italian system expects a single surname, and a two- or three-word surname often gets typed differently than it appears on your passport. Double-check what was typed before you sign.
- What's the difference between the codice fiscale and the tessera sanitaria?
- The codice fiscale is the number itself. The tessera sanitaria is the public health system card, which has that same number printed on it and arrives by mail once you have your residenza. If you don't have your residenza yet, you're left with just the paper copy of the code.
- Can I get a codice fiscale without a permesso di soggiorno?
- It depends on your situation. EU citizens don't need one. Non-EU citizens usually need to show the permit or, while it's still being processed, the receipt for the application — bring both if you have them.
